Trend: Gladiators

This fashion year, the runways have dominantly seen gladiators. Whatever may be the look, gladiators have been adorned.

Gladiator sandals are flat-soled, open-toed shoes with multiple straps of leather crisscrossing around the leg. Over the years, this design has seen many changes and has evolved immensely.

This footwear is named after armed warriors in the Roman Republic. Many of the warriors as well as citizens (for outdoors only) used to wear gladiator sandals; shoes or boots (calcei or calceus), footwear with toe coverings with straps which covered the ankles, the calf, or up to the knee. Also, gladiators when depicted in ancient (and modern) art, are often shown to be worn by gods.

Nowdays, gladiators have become a marker of sex, status, rank, and fashion although it wasn't until the sixties that gladiators made a mark in the fashion industry. It brought attention the rising hemlines, exposed legs and had a utopian, mystic touch to it; designers were drawn to its design for various reasons. While never out of fashion, the strapped-on sandal is once again having a renaissance for spring.

There is something about the history and strength of a gladiator sandal; it is a perfect representation of my design aesthetic, combining traditional craftsmanship and technique with modern flare. This style has a way of instantly transforming a woman and bringing out a sexy, strong confidence in her.” -Daniele Michetti, shoe designer.

The gladiator trend is no longer so novel and has unquestionably become one of the most popular shoe silhouettes in recent seasons, it’s becoming a modern statement piece, less casual and more glamorous. In my opinion, its the must-have shoe this summer season.” -Paul Andrew, shoe designer.

I think for shoe designers, the gladiator is a dream style to design because it offers you space to create and be imaginative.” -Christina Martini, the founder of Ancient Greek Sandals.

From flat strap-on gladiator sandals to a high-heeled pair, from straps reaching ankles to those being knee-high, from straight to curvy crisscross straps, gladiators continue to prove their fun and functional characteristics and provide minimal, girly, edgy, quirky and classic looks, as per their innovative designs and outfit pairings.
